Desigual retail interface

Barcelona, 2003

Desigual is one of Spain's leading apparel brands. Founded in 1984 and branded as "Atypical Spanish Wear', it has expanded rapidly in the last decade reaching, as of 2009, 65 countries. Its turnover has grown from 8m euros in 2002 to over 162m in 2008.

Its colourful, eclectic and upbeat style, completely revamped each season, is distinctive throughout the world.

In 2004, I was asked to design the interface for an online retail system which would help improve their core ordering and stock processes, the very heart of the logistical operationsand crucial for their success.

Clothing retail is notoriously complex, in that the breadth of locations in which design, manufacturing and delivery take place means that there is always room for mistakes. Decisions on which garmets, how many and of what sizes should go into production and where, are taken on a daily basis. And, while one season's products start to go into production, the next season's designs are already being worked on.

The interface I designed would give each branch access to the main ordering system, which would both receive and send out real-time information on sold and available stock.

Branded 'Too Easy', it was meant to be just that, too easy to use.

The interface was designed for touch screens to be installed in all branches throughout the world.

A simple and fast interface would give direct access to stock information and suggest the best purchases for that location at that point in time.
