Travelling photographic exhibition Galapagos, 2008-2009 |
|
This was a simple idea to use some of the excellent photography originally produced, but ultimately discarded, for the revamp of the Environmental Interpretation Centre in San Cristobal. Most Galapagos residents don't get to travel regularly between islands, nevermind outside the archipelago itself. And so, although they see how their own community develops, they seldom get to see how the other three inhabited islands change. A travelling exhibition would give them that opportunity. Between the end of 2008 and the beginning of 2009 I developed a number of prototypes until I arrived at a solution that was portable, light and durable in the extreme sun and salty air of the islands, as well as easily (and affordably) reusable. Once completed, the exhibition was handed over to the National Park Service, who chose to show it for the first time in Isabela island. |

I tried several ideas until I arrived at the final solution. Long canvas prints were draped over the top part of the aluminium structures and tightened at the bottom with adjustable fittings. |

Putting the exhibition together was easy, and it quickly attracted attention. On the left, Gianny Arismendi of the National Park Service, helps us put it all together. |

The reaction from those who saw it was always interesting. Very often, they recognised people from their own island. Other times they expressed surprise at how the other inhabited islands had changed since they last saw them. |
