Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust London, 2001 |
|
The police handling of the investigation into the racist murder of 18 year old Stephen Lawrence in Eltham, South London on the 22nd April 1993, led to the 1999 public enquiry by Sir William Macpherson, which concluded that London's Metropolitan Police was institutionally racist. This was a pivotal moment for civil rights in the UK, and the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust was set up shortly afterwards, with Stephen's brother Stuart and his mother Doreen at its centre. In time, funds were secured and the design and building of the Stephen Lawrence Centre began. The Centre is today a reality as a new model for vocational training and business development, with special attention paid to urban design and regeneration, after Stephen's wish to become an architect. I was approached by the Trust's Chief Executive to design what would be its first website (now superceeded by a very successful WordPress-based design). My design was a simple, interactive presentation website, relying on images and prominent tyography to get the main points across. |
Karin Woodley, Chief Executive of the SLCT (and my former music theory teacher!) You can also see her on the kcsc website I had designed the previous year. |
