Product Design for Life Sciences and Operational Innovation

I joined Thomson Reuter’s Life Sciences division between 2014-2016 to lead the design of new product propositions based on a wealth of scientific literature and clinical data.These products were aimed at crossing complex data and presenting it in such a way that it gave medical practitioners new insights and possibilities for the treatment of chronic conditions that would otherwise may not have existed.

In the process, I also:

  • Established Design Thinking as an integral part of Product Development practice.
  • Useed Design Advocacy to raise the level of Design awareness and maturity across Engineering, Product Management, Business Analysis and senior executives.
  • Planned, recruited (internally and externally) and executed strategic innovation initiatives.

Clinical Genomics Advisor

This product was conceived to deliver new content & analytic capabilities for large/mid-sized hospitals and diagnostic laboratories who provide complex genetic patient data interpretation services to physicians and researchers, allowing Thomson Reuters Life Sciences division to drive revenue from a high growth market.

The tool gives molecular pathologists access to accurate and comprehensive content on gene variants via a simple user interface to interpret patient genetic tests, allowing them to deliver the best diagnosis and treatment options to their physician customers.

My role:

  • Design Lead.

  • Support to lead Product Manager and Business Analysts in translating complex data into a simple, seamless user experience.

  • UX / UI Component Design.

  • UI Stack specifications and front end framework management.

  • Implementation of Agile / Scrum development methodology and Development Support.

As a Product Manager I gained invaluable insights into the Product Design process from Carlos that have stayed with me since.

Operational Innovation

On top of my regular Product Design work, I applied and was awarded an Operational Innovation Fund grant to design and build a product that delivered elegant and consistent reading experiences of scientific content across all devices.

I hired a development team and managed the project, as well as providing design direction for a new product.

Impact: thousands of scientific reports and other publications, previously stuck in legacy formats, were made accessible across the company. 

This project set the gold standard for the Operational Innovation Fund.
